2012 Valley Hockey League Championships - Highlights
What began back in September has come to an exciting end as the 2012 Valley Hockey League Championships were held at rinks located across the region this past month.

These games featured some unbelievable title runs and nail-biting finishes with 39 games going into overtime.  Eleven of those were decided in a shootout.

Although all playoff games will be covered by Rink Reporter Mike Shalin (look for those roundups to be posted shortly), we congratulate all teams on a job well done.

Also, please don't forget to send in your championship photos to the VHL (events@valley-associates.com) so that we can post your memories on our web site!

And the (Medal Count) Winner Is...

For the third time in four years, Andover captured the top spot in the medal count with nine medals. This time around, the Golden Warriors collected five golds and four silvers.

Finishing three back in a tie for second place were two programs - Burlington (2 - Gold; 4 - Silver) and Melrose (2 Gold; 4 - Silver).

Wilmington matched Andover with five gold medals... a feat that was accomplished by just those two programs!
That means that Wilmington batted .100 when their teams reached the finals in 2012!

A total of 52 different programs captured at least one medal during this year's playoffs, while all but 13 of those programs collected more than one medal.

Just the Stats

2,045 goals were scored in 352 playoff games.

Out of those 352 playoff games, 28 games went into overtime There were also 11 shootouts recorded during the playoff period.

A total of 8 cross-over games – which featured American Conference champions facing off against National Conference champions – were contested.

For the third year in a row, the American Conference led the way with 5 victories.

What’s In a Seed?

Proving once again that a team’s seeding heading into the playoffs can mean very little when a title is on the line, there were a host of higher seeds that went the distance this year. The Everett Squirt AAA team entered the playoffs as a #6 seed, but they played like a team on a mission en route to winning the Squirt East National – AAA title.

After defeating #3 Agawam Squirt AA and the #9 Wizards Squirt AAA, Everett faced off against the top-seeded NH East Squirt AAA’s and outlasted them by a score of 3-1. Everett will once again be a higher seed as they will take on the American Champions - Wilmington Squirt AAA – which one their divisional title as a third seed.

If you went by the seedings, the Peewee A South Championship battle will feature two unlikely teams. The #6 Burlington AA will take on #8 Haverhill Pentucket Peewee A1 in Haverhill on April 7th at 1:00 p.m. Haverhill Pentucket escaped a tough challenge from #9 S&S Peewee A in the first round of play (they won 4-3), but they exploded offensively from that point on to post a 7-2 win against #4 Concord Carlisle Peewee A1 in the semifinals and then a 6-4 victory against #2 Cape Ann Peewee 1.

Meanwhile, Burlington AA began its playoff run with a 6-0 defeat of #3 Agawam A and then a 5-2 victory over #2 Winchester A1. They claimed the title with a 3-1 win over #8 Triton A in the finals.

Other higher seeds that advanced to the finals of their divisions included - #5 Burlington Bantam A (lost to #3 Maples Bantam A, 4-2, in the Bantam West American – A final), #5 Masco A1 (lost to #2 Acton Boxboro A2, 3-2, in the Squirt South National – A final), #5 Melrose Squirt A1 (lost to #2 Chelmsford Squirt AA, 3-2, in the Squirt West American – A final), #5 Lynnfield A (lost to #2 Nashoba A2, 3-2, in the Squirt West National – A final ) and #8 Hollis Squirt A1 (lost to #1 Lexington Bedford Squirt AA, 4-1, in the Squirt West National – AA final).

Congratulations goes out to all of the players for their hard work, while the coaches and parents deserve much credit for dedicating so much time, effort and resources to make this season another huge success.
