2018 Mite Championships Recap
The 2018 VHL Mite Championships are in the books! With 23 Championship games, the weekend was jam-packed with action. Several higher seeded teams fought their way to the Championship to come out victorious.
Most notable was sixth-seeded Nashoba Mite 1 in the “AA” Central Red. They took on Chelmsford in the Quarterfinal game winning 2-1 before advancing to the Semifinal game topping Wilmington in an impressive 11-4 win, moving onto the Final where they eventually upset a top-seeded Billerica team 6-4.
In the “AA” South Blue, a fifth-seeded East Coast Leafs Mite 1 team took home the title. Sneaking by Medfield in the Quarterfinal game 5-4 they advanced to the Semifinal game shutting out Lexington-Bedford 2-0, and finally defeating a second-seeded Watertown team 5-4.
Another fifth-seeded team – Lexington/Bedford Mite 1 dominated the “AAA” South Blue skating past Waltham 5-3 in the Quarterfinal game, beating Brookline game 5-3 in the Semifinals, to eventually topping third-seeded Needham 5-2 in the final.
A final fifth-seed upset came from Concord-Carlisle Mite 2 in the “A” Central White where they shut down 5-1 Tewksbury in the Quarterfinals, slide past Groton 3-2 in the Semifinal game 3-2, to lastly upsetting second-seeded Wilmington 3-1 in the final.
Waltham led the medal count with two golds and one silver. Amesbury, Brookline, Concord-Carlisle, Framingham, Needham and Wilmington all followed with a total of two medals.
Other teams taking home gold medals include Andover, Arlington, Burlington, Charlestown, Chelmsford, Greater Lowell, Lexington/Bedford, Lynnfield, Masco, Nashoba, North Andover, Stoneham, Tewksbury, Tri Valley, Triton, and Winchester.
Taking home the silver medals were Billerica, Cape Ann, Danvers, East Coast Wizards, Groton, Haverhill, Lynn, Marblehead, Medford, South Boston, Watertown, Wellesley, Winthrop and Woburn.
